Why Passwords Still Matter

Despite the rise of biometrics and passwordless authentication, passwords remain the most widely used authentication method across the internet. According to recent studies, the average person manages over 100 online accounts, making password security more critical — and more challenging — than ever.

How Passwords Are Compromised

Brute Force Attacks

Attackers systematically try every possible character combination until they find the correct password. Modern GPUs can test billions of password combinations per second, making short passwords extremely vulnerable.

A 6-character password using only lowercase letters can be cracked in under one second. An 8-character password with mixed characters takes approximately 8 hours. A 12-character password with full complexity would take centuries.

Dictionary Attacks

Instead of trying every combination, dictionary attacks use lists of common passwords, words, and known leaked passwords. Passwords like "password123", "qwerty", and "admin" are among the first attempts in any attack.

Credential Stuffing

When a data breach exposes usernames and passwords, attackers automatically test these credentials against other websites. Since over 60% of people reuse passwords across multiple accounts, credential stuffing is devastatingly effective.

Rainbow Table Attacks

Rainbow tables are precomputed tables of hash values for common passwords. If an attacker obtains a database of hashed passwords, they can look up the hash in the rainbow table to find the original password. This is why salting hashes is essential.

Password Best Practices

  1. Use Long Passphrases — A passphrase like "correct-horse-battery-staple" is both stronger and easier to remember than "P@ss1w0rd!"
  2. Never Reuse Passwords — Every account should have a unique password to prevent credential stuffing
  3. Use a Password Manager — Tools like Bitwarden, 1Password, or KeePass generate and store strong, unique passwords for every account
  4. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication — MFA adds a second layer of defense even if your password is compromised
  5. Check for Breaches — Services like "Have I Been Pwned" let you check if your email or password has appeared in known data breaches

How Passwords Should Be Stored

If you are a developer, never store passwords in plaintext. Use modern hashing algorithms designed for password storage:

  • bcrypt — Includes automatic salting and configurable work factor
  • Argon2 — Winner of the Password Hashing Competition, designed to be memory-hard
  • scrypt — Memory-intensive algorithm that resists hardware-based attacks

Avoid using MD5 or SHA-256 for password hashing — these are general-purpose hash functions that are too fast for password storage, making brute force attacks feasible.
