Understanding IP Geolocation: How It Works and Why It Matters

What Is IP Geolocation?

Every device connected to the internet is assigned a unique identifier called an IP address (Internet Protocol address). IP Geolocation is the process of mapping that address to a real-world geographic location — including country, region, city, and sometimes even the latitude and longitude coordinates.

When you connect to a website, your IP address is automatically shared with the server. This is a fundamental part of how the internet works — without it, the server wouldn't know where to send the response. IP Geolocation databases cross-reference these addresses with known network assignments to determine approximate physical locations.

IPv4 vs. IPv6: What's the Difference?

The internet currently operates on two versions of the IP protocol:

IPv4 addresses are running out, which is why IPv6 was created. However, both protocols coexist today, and most geolocation tools — including our IP Intelligence tool — support both formats.

How Geolocation Databases Work

IP Geolocation relies on databases maintained by organizations like ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, and commercial providers. These databases map IP ranges to:

  • Country and Region — Determined by which Regional Internet Registry (RIR) allocated the block.
  • City — Estimated based on ISP infrastructure data and network topology.
  • ISP / Organization — The entity that owns or leases the IP block.
  • ASN (Autonomous System Number) — A unique identifier for a network operator, used in BGP routing.

It's important to note that IP Geolocation is approximate, not exact. It can typically identify your city, but it won't pinpoint your street address. Accuracy varies: country-level accuracy is around 99%, while city-level accuracy ranges from 50% to 80% depending on the region.

  • Threat Intelligence — Identifying the origin of malicious traffic or attack campaigns.
  • Fraud Prevention — Flagging transactions that originate from unexpected geographic locations.
